Rob Zombie Directs Both His 'Never Gonna Stop' Video and Ozzy Osbourne's 'Dreamer' Video During Unexpected 'Break'
Zombie's New Track 'Never Gonna Stop' to Be Featured in Rollerball Movie
December 21, 2001 During three weeks off from the Merry Mayhem Tour due to Ozzy Osbourne's broken leg, Rob Zombie returned to L.A. and directed two videos, his own "Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)" and Ozzy's "Dreamer," each of which will be seen early in the new year. He finished shooting both within one mid-November week.
"Never Gonna Stop (the red, red kroovy)" will be the second track and
video from the Top 10 The Sinister Urge (Geffen Records),
released Nov. 13th. This second single follows "Feel So Numb." Of the futuristic, '60s-style video, Zombie said, "I'm finally doing an idea that I've
wanted to do for years and years and never got around to. I wanted to
basically refilm A Clockwork Orange... I always loved that movie."
"Dreamer" will be the next track and video from Ozzy's latest hit album,
the gold, Top 10 Down to Earth. Though they teamed for the tour and Ozzy is
featured on the track "Iron Head" off The Sinister Urge, that Zombie would direct a video for him came out of the blue. Zombie explained, "They could have picked
anyone but Sharon (Osbourne, Ozzy's manager and wife) said, 'We love the video
for 'Feel So Numb.' We really want you to do Ozzy's video.'" "Dreamer" is
notably different from Ozzy's previous videos. With the song's thematic
kinship to John Lennon's "Imagine," Zombie took a more classical approach,
weaving together a dream world with a winter wonderland.
Zombie's videography previously included an MTV Video Music Award in 1993
for Best Hard Rock Video for directing White Zombie's "More Human Than Human"
and helming numerous other videos for his projects, including a handful for
his 1998 triple platinum Hellbilly Deluxe. Among other cinematic
excursions, he has also written and directed the as-yet-unreleased feature
House of 1000 Corpes.
The song "Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)" will also be featured in the motion picture Rollerball, which premieres nationwide February 8, 2002. Footage from the controversial, extreme sports action, sci-fi flick will be included in the futuristic, Zombie-directed "Never Gonna Stop" music video set to debut in January.
The song will not only be heard in the movie but in the national television and radio campaign for the film, which was
directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and stars Chris Klein, Jean Reno, LL
Cool J, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Andrew Bryniarski. In addition, "Never
Gonna Stop," and perhaps Zombie himself, will be included in various
Rollerball promotional tie-ins with MTV, ESPN's Winter X Games and the Super
Bowl, which will be played the weekend prior to the film's opening.
A remake of the 1975 cult classic, Rollerball takes place in the not too
distant future, and the future is fierce. A notorious renegade sport mixing
in-line skating and motorcycles, Rollerball packs arenas all over the world as
audiences root for their teams and star players in a television sensation that
can turn lethal.
Given Zombie's well-known fanaticism for horror and sci-fi pop culture,
which often appears in his songs, bringing "Never Gonna Stop" to Rollerball
and vice versa was a match made in cinematic heaven.
Both Zombie and Ozzy are now back on the Merry Mayhem Tour, which
re-started November 29 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
