Bronx Museum of the Arts Launches Monthly Hip-Hop Party

November 13, 2001 – Legendary DJ Kool Herc helps the Bronx Museum of the Arts launch Bounce – a new monthly Friday night hip-hop party – in conjunction with the museum's current exhibition, One Planet Under a Groove: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art. Bounce brings the DJ and club culture vibe into the museum, blending urban lifestyles with a mix of music, live performances, video, and new media projects.

Thursday, November 15, 2002, 8:00 pm to 12:00 am, the launch of this monthly party series will take place at the Key Roller Skating Rink, a.k.a. The Skate Key, in the South Bronx. Bringing back that old-school party vibe DJ Kool Herc will spin the classics, hip hop and R&B sounds. Flavoring the mix, Full Circle – a breakdance crew – will perform their gravity-defying b-boy moves. An artist will be on hand to snap hip-hop portraits, while screenings of various music videos will add to the "back in the day" atmosphere of the hip-hop skate party.

The Key Roller Skating Rink, located at 220 East 138th Street, is near the IRT 4 and 5 train station at 138th and Grand Concourse.

Returning to the Bronx Museum, Bounce will be presented in the Museum's new performance space, Performance LAB. The first party at the Museum, Friday, December 14, 7 pm to 10 pm, will feature Rhizome Remix, a special new media event, presented in collaboration with Rhizome.org. This event, co-organized by Erika Muhammad and Sound Lab, will feature a special performance by the Anti-Pop Consortium and remixes of media-based works from the One Planet exhibition. Also, as part of Bounce, a series of youth performances and media workshops will be presented, providing teen's access to new media and performance artists.

Bounce is a featured program of Performance LAB, a pilot initiative presenting a series of live stage performances, spoken word, film, video, new media, music, and dance programs. The LAB extends the Bronx Museum's exploration of contemporary cultural production into alternative and experimental performance art forms. It questions, explores, and redefines the traditional public art space blurring the lines between museum practice and other forms of popular culture. Through a multidisciplinary approach Performance LAB weaves performance and digital culture within an eclectic offering, revolving around urban lifestyles.

Bounce at Performance LAB is organized by Eathon G. Hall, Jr., Curator of Education and Public Programs and Tana Hargest, Assistant Curator of Education for New Media Initiatives. Steve Sapp from Universes organized the Bounce performance series.

Other Performance LAB and exhibition related programs include:

On POINT: A series of discussions on contemporary art and culture
November 2001
Curator's Voice
Join the organizers of One Planet exhibition, Bronx Museum curator Lydia Yee and Franklin Sirmans, writer and independent curator, for the Curator's Voice. This program invites the public to hear the curator's voice, their perspectives and ideas behind the exhibition and the impact of hip hop culture on contemporary art practice.

Performance LAB
Universes' Slanguage
Date to be announced
Unleashing their boundary-smashing creation Slanguage makes its Museum debut. A troupe of five multi-disciplined performers hailing from the South Bronx, Universes fuses poetry, jazz riffs, and hip hop with politics, down home blues, and Spanish boleros, producing an exhilarating theatrical event. Slanguage, commissioned by the New York Theater Workshop, was written and performed by Universes and developed and directed by Jo Bonney.

Hip Hop Conference
February 2002
"Droppin' science," this two-day event examines hip hop's intersection with other discursive fields such as commercial design, digital media, urbanism, and contemporary art practices. This event will be co-organized with The New School University.

Access Gallery / Hip Hop Media Lounge is an interactive space for families, teens, and adults to have hands-on experiences with some of the ideas and issues informing the creative process in contemporary art. The gallery and other public spaces are activated for exhibition related reading areas, art making activities, video screenings, and digital and new media projects.

Performance LAB, a pilot initiative, is made possible by the support of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and Congressman José Serrano with additional support from The Rockefeller Foundation. Bounce is presented in conjunction with One Planet under a Groove: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art. One Planet received support from The Rockefeller Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
