Blue Man Group Recording POV, Follow Up Album to Grammy-Nominated Audio
October 27, 2001 Blue Man Group, which began as an off-Broadway sensation and grew into an entertainment phenomenon, is currently in the recording studio, working on their second album, titled POV (Point of View), scheduled for release on Virgin Records in June 2002. Blue Man Group, created by Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton and Chris Wink, follows their debut album, Audio, which was released on Virgin Records in December 1999. For a debut album, Audio met with considerable success, beginning with rave reviews, then a Grammy nomination in the best pop instrumental category.
Blue Man Group joined Moby and Jill Scott for an appearance at
the 2001 Grammy Awards telecast which earned a standing ovation. Audio sales
climbed steadily, exceeding all expectations and the album was a regular
fixture on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. After almost two years on the
market, Audio joined Billboard's Top 200.
"POV represents a dramatic evolution for Blue Man Group's unique sound,"
says Chris Wink. "We will continue to explore the 'tribadelic' sounds created
by our tube drums and other invented instruments, but in the
process we will be walking much further into the indie-rock and dance music
landscapes. Once there, we're hoping Blue Man will provide a refreshing take
on these somewhat tired genres."
Matt Goldman adds, "POV will also represent a departure because it will be
the first time Blue Man Group uses vocals or vocal loops." Phil Stanton, (the
most bombastic of the three) says "You better put a surge protector on your
cable box, because when our video comes out, your TV is going to explode."
The Blue Man Group sound, first developed for its stage productions in New
York, Boston, Chicago and Las Vegas, was amplified and expanded for Audio, and
has been absorbed by pop culture. Millions of TV viewers have heard Blue
Man's music on commercials for ABC's "The Practice," as the soundtrack to
various events at the 2000 Olympics and on CBS's TV coverage of the NCAA
Basketball Tournament. In June 2001, Blue Man Group performed before
60,000 pop music fans at Wango Tango at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles on a
bill that included The Backstreet Boys, Nelly Furtado and Ricky Martin.
Blue Man Group began in New York City as the mad scientists of
off-Broadway and the show has gone on to become an international sensation.
In addition to the four Blue Man Group productions, Blue Man Group has been
seen all over television, including several Emmy nominated appearances on "The
Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on MTV and CNN's World beat and in popular
commercials for Intel.
