Mega-Benefit Concerts in NY, NJ and DC

"The Concert for New York" (NY), "United We Stand" (DC), "Alliance of Neighbors" (NJ)

October 18, 2001 – "The Concert for New York" continues to garner more artists each day. Currently, the line up includes David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, The Who, Bono and Edge from U2, Elton John, Janet Jackson, Backstreet Boys, Bon Jovi, James Taylor, John Mellencamp, Macy Gray, Goo Goo Dolls, Melissa Etheridge, Destiny's Child, Marc Anthony, Five For Fighting, and India.Arie plus Paul Shaffer as musical director.

In addition, the following actors will join the fun: Harrison Ford, Selma Hayek, Will Farrell, Jim Carrey, Meg Ryan, Michael J. Fox, Susan Sarandon, David Spade, Julia Stiles, Denis Leary, John Cusack, Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe.

Woody Allen, Edward Burns, Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Jerry Seinfeld and Kevin Smith will each direct an original short film.

The concert will air live on VH1 and be simulcast, commercial-free, on radio stations across the country October 20 at 7 PM (ET/PT).

A one-night-only music event to take place at Madison Square Garden, "The Concert for New York" is to raise funds for those affected by the September 11th World Trade Center tragedy and to honor the heroic rescue workers. All money raised from "The Concert for New York" will go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which was established by the Robin Hood Foundation, with funds to be distributed to charities benefiting the victims including the Twin Towers Fund created by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. One-hundred percent of the money raised will go directly to aid victims and their families.

"United We Stand"

The following day, Sunday, October 21st, an eight-hour music festival will be held at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, beginning at noon ET.

Artists on the bill include Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, Usher, Aerosmith, Rod Stewart, James Brown, Aaron Carter, Al Green, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Kiss, Ricky Martin and 'N Sync, the Backstreet Boys, Goo Goo Dolls, and Train.

All money raised from "United We Stand" will benefit the American Red Cross Relief Fund, the Pentagon Relief Fund and the Salvation Army Relief Fund.

"Alliance of Neighbors"

"Alliance of Neighbors" benefit concert will feature Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, the Pilgrim Baptist Church Celestial Choir of Red Bank, Phoebe Snow, Aztec Two-Step, Garry Tallent, Max Weinberg, Randy Moore, Joe Ely, Joan Jett, Asbury Park-based Highway 9 (formerly Sam Hill), Sun Artists and Elvis Presley band members DJ Fontana, Sonny Burgess and Jerry Sheff.

Performances will take place two nights (Thurs., Oct. 18, and Fri. Oct. 19) at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. The second performance will be televised on CN8, the Comcast Network. Thursday's sound check has been opened to the families of the more than 160 Monmouth County victims. Proceeds from the concerts will benefit Monmouth County victims and survivors of Sept 11 terrorist attacks. "These concerts are just the first step in our efforts to help rebuild this community," said Red Bank Mayor Edward McKenna.
