Missy Elliott Breaks Records

September 27, 2002

You have to hand it to Missy Elliott – when she "works it," she works it. She has just scored her ninth Top Ten single, titled – appropriately enough – "Work It," breaking a number of radio airplay records with the hit weeks before U.S. radio stations even officially added it to their play lists.

The song soared from #21 to #7 on the R&B/Hip Hop chart, racking up over 42 million listeners. The song gained an incredible 1,156 spins, making it the week's Greatest Gainer in the format, and marking the highest detection increase ever for a non-debuting title. "Work It" also earns Greatest Gainer nods on the Rap chart with an increase of 1,616 detects. This is the fourth consecutive week Missy earned Greatest Gainer on both of those charts. The single has become just as explosive in the pop formats, with "Work It" going from #15 to #7 on the Rhythmic chart, and from #14 to #5 on the Crossover chart. With a pop audience of more than 62 million listeners in tow, Missy, here again, has become the Greatest Gainer in the history of the chart.

To top things off, Missy currently has the #1 Mix Show record in the country and is set to take over the Mainstream Top 40 chart next.

"Work It" is the first single from Missy's upcoming fourth album, Under Construction, which is scheduled to hit stores on November 12. The album was co-produced by Missy and her longtime collaborator Timbaland. Missy's last album, the award-winning Miss E... So Addictive, has sold almost two-million units, and landed on many critics' "Best of the Year" lists for 2001.

The multi-talented Missy has rivaled the biggest names in pop and hip hop, scoring hits as a writer, artist, producer and CEO of her own label, the GoldMind Inc., which launched R&B superstar Tweet this past spring.

Missy has written and produced hits for some of the biggest names in the industry – including Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child, Janet Jackson and NSync's Justin Timberlake. The Portsmouth, Virginia native has been nominated for numerous awards, and has won a Grammy and BET's award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist, among other honors.

In October, Missy will be debuting her new live show at the Vanity Fair "In Concert" Series to benefit Step Up Women's Network, an organization dedicated to raising funds for women's health issues and women's advocacy organizations through national and local events that support and promote the career development of its members. Missy's performance will include a tribute to the late Aaliyah, who was a good friend and collaborator of Missy's.
