Smoke Out Festival's New York and Hawaii Itinerary Changes
September 10, 2001 The Cypress Hill Smoke Out (the West Coast day-long celebration of
hip-hop, rock and electronica which is venturing outside its home base of
Los Angeles this year) has some changes in its schedule.
The September 29 New York date, originally scheduled at the PNC Bank Arts
Center in Holmdel, NJ, has been postponed until another location in the New
York City area is found, according to the event's producers, Guerilla Union.
The festival, which features artists such as Cypress Hill, Deftones, Fear Factory, Busta Rhymes, Redman, Long Beach Dub Allstars and
others, was suddenly deemed unsuitable by the PNC Arts Center due to various
musical events this past summer at the venue that resulted in less that
desirable conduct from attendees.
"The Smoke Out has set a certain standard on the West Coast and because of
the problems with the venue we'll be unable to produce the show to our
liking," states Chang Weisberg, President of Guerilla Union. "A lot of
money has been invested in producing this show, and Cypress Hill and
Guerilla Union are ultimately disappointed not to be able to do the show
right now, but promise to bring the Smoke Out to the East Coast as soon as
possible."
At the same time, the October 14 Kualoa Ranch date in Honolulu, Hawaii has
been moved to Sunday, October 21. Artists confirmed for this particular
show include Cypress Hill, Pennywise, Suicidal Tendencies, and Kottonmouth
Kings, with more to be added. Tickets for the 10/21 Hawaii date go on sale
on Saturday, September 15 at 9:00 a.m. PST.
Meanwhile, both the Los Angeles and San Francisco dates -- at the Glen Helen
Blockbuster Pavilion October 6 (Columbus Day weekend) and the Oakland
Coliseum October 13, respectively -- will continue as planned.
The complete line-up for the Los Angeles and San Francisco dates is as
follows: Cypress Hill, Deftones, Busta Rhymes, Redman, Method Man, Erick
Sermon & Keith Murray, Suicidal Tendencies, Fear Factory, Afroman, Long
Beach Dub Allstars, Kottonmouth Kings, NOFX, Armand Van Helden and DJ Sneak,
with recent new additions of DJ Swamp and DJ Z-Trip on 4x4, Richard Humpty
Vission, and Liquid Todd. More acts will be announced closer to show date.
Within a year of its 1998 debut, Smoke Out grew into the largest single-day music festival on the West Coast, with last year's attendance estimated at 60,000 fans as noted by the Los Angeles
Times. Past Smoke Out artists have included Limp Bizkit, System of a Down,
311, Xzibit, Pennywise, Erick Sermon, Dilated Peoples, Funky Tekno Tribe,
Zebrahead, (hed)pe, Gang Starr and others.
