"More than 20 years after his tragic death, John Lennon's music, as well
as his cultural significance, remains as fresh as ever. John spent much of
his life promoting the idea of bringing people together, and this gathering of
diverse and compelling artists coming together on his behalf should make for a
memorable event," said Ken Ehrlich, co-executive producer.
John Lennon used his fame as a sharp-tongued but pop-savvy songwriter,
visual artist and absurdist poet as a platform for social and political
change, to promote world peace and to question generally accepted mores. He
rose to fame in the 1960s with bandmates Paul McCartney, George Harrison and
Ringo Starr -- The Beatles, whose far-ranging interests in music, art and
fashion helped shape the tastes of a generation. Lennon married Yoko Ono in
1969 and embarked on a solo career producing such albums as John
Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (with #1 single "Imagine"), Mind Games, Walls and
Bridges, Rock 'n' Roll and Sometime in New York City (with Ono). After
spending some time in reclusion, Lennon returned to the pop-culture scene in
1980 with the release of Double Fantasy (with #1 single "Starting Over").
Lennon's life was taken on December 8, 1980. Although he would be inducted
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, John Lennon will always be
remembered as more than a musician.
Over the past three years, the TNT Masters Series has also honored Burt Bacharach, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, and Brian Wilson.
