The Guess Who and Joe Cocker Kick Off North American Tour
August 6, 2001 Newly reunited the Guess Who have confirmed more dates for their North American tour with Joe Cocker. Set to begin Tuesday, August 7 in Vancouver, British Columbia, the 50-date trek is now slated to wrap up Sunday, November 4 in Seattle, WA. "Between the two groups, you're going to hear something like 70 great rock songs," says Guess Who singer/keyboardist Burton Cummings.
Meanwhile, the Guess Who recently achieved the distinguished milestone of
having their classic '60s hit "These Eyes" played on radio stations no less
than 3,000,000 times. According to BMI, that airplay would equal 17.1 years
of continuous airplay on American radio and television. the Guess Who
songwriters Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings join a select group of
legendary million-airplay artists including John Lennon, Paul McCartney,
Elton John, Roy Orbison, Sam Cook, Otis Redding, Eric Clapton and Carole
King.
"These Eyes" was a hit for the Guess Who when it was originally
released in April 1969. Bachman left the group two
years later and achieved success as a solo artist. Cummings and the group
went on to record 14 more albums, including Share the Land, one of their
biggest hits. This is the first time Burton and Randy have been back for an American tour. Other Guess Who tracks that have hit the million-airplay mark include "Laughing" and "Undun," while "No Time" and "American Woman" have each passed two million plays.
The Guess Who -- Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Garry Peterson, Dnnie McDougall and Bill Wallace -- reunited last year for a string of dates across their Canadian homeland, releasing the double-live Running Back Through Canada CD, which went platinum there. That album is expected to be released in the U.S. later this year (details TBA).
The "American Woman" tour will also feature such Guess Who hits as
"No Sugar Tonight" and "Share The Land" as well as hits from Bachman's group
Bachman-Turner-Overdrive like "Takin' Care of Business" and "Let It Ride."
The group will be preceded onstage by Joe Cocker, best known for hits such as "Feelin' Alright" and "You Are So Beautiful."
