Eminem Files for Divorce
August 17, 2000 Eminem, the chart-topping rapper whose real name is Marshall Mathers, filed for divorce from Kim Mathers in Detroit yesterday.
"The two have had an on-again, off-again relationship that's been extensively detailed in the press," a spokesperson at Interscope Records said. "In early June, the couple separated, and since then Eminem has come to the decision that a divorce is unavoidable."
The couple was married last summer, but had been together for several years. The last few months, however, have been turbulent to say the least.
In June, Eminem allegedly pulled a gun on a man accompanying his wife to a Detroit-area bar after Eminem saw the pair kissing. Mathers was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a concealed weapon while Kim was charged with disorderly conduct.
One month later Kim attempted suicide at the couple's Sterling Heights, Michigan home. Eminem has even mocked his wife in his live show, reenacting the scene in the Detroit bar with the aid of a blow-up doll introduced to the audience as "Kim."
