Carlos Santana Celebrates 53rd Birthday to the Tune of Ongoing Supernatural Success With 21 Million Albums Sold Worldwide, a String of Sold-Out Tour Dates, and Four Latin Grammy(R) Nominations

August 1, 2000 – Carlos Santana ushered in his 53rd year on the planet this July with an on-top-of-the world birthday celebration marked by a continued sweep of Supernatural success. At the pinnacle of a remarkable recording and performing career that has spanned five decades, sold upwards of fifty million albums, and outlasted countless musical trends, Carlos Santana is riding the wave of his biggest selling album ever.

Supernatural’s most recent accolade is major recognition by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (LARAS), who are readying for the first annual Latin Grammy Awards, set to take place September 13, 2000.

In LARAS' recent announcement of nominees in all categories, Supernatural received four nods including Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "Corazon Espinado." The song features Mana, and was produced by super-hot Latin crossover whiz KC Porter, who is up for Producer of the Year for the track. Supernatural’s four Latin GRAMMY(R) nominations are rounded out with recognition for "El Farol" in the Best Pop Instrumental Performance category.

To date, Arista's Supernatural has achieved RIAA Diamond status, with sales of thirteen million domestically and over twenty-one million worldwide. It has just surpassed both the Titanic soundtrack and Hootie & The Blowfish's Cracked Rear View to become the #7 best-selling album of the Soundscan(R) era.

Supernatural was honored with nine GRAMMYs(R) in February 2000 at NARAS' 42nd annual awards ceremony including Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, and Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Smooth," Santana's unforgettable track with Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas. "Smooth" went on to a record twelve consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, making it the longest running #1 single of 1999.

Supernatural’s second single, "Maria, Maria," a collaboration with Wyclef Jean, spent ten weeks in the top slot on the Hot 100 and earned a GRAMMY(R) for Best Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocals. The current single (and video on MTV) from Supernatural, which after 55 weeks is still at #23 on the Billboard 200 album chart, is "Put Your Lights On," a joint effort with alternative rock favorite Everlast, who is also opening up the second half of Santana's just launched concert tour. The next single, about to be released, is "Love of My Life," featuring Santana with the hugely popular Dave Matthews.

The Supernatural phenomenon continues with a two-leg, forty-plus date nationwide large venue concert tour that kicked off July 20th in West Palm Beach, Florida and will continue for over three months, capping with an October 26th date in Vancouver, BC. The first half of the tour features phenomenon-unto-herself soul diva Macy Gray as the opening act. The second half continues with modern rock powerhouse and Supernatural album contributor Everlast warming up the capacity crowds.

More than three decades into his career, Carlos Santana is more vital and relevant than ever, one of the biggest musical forces on the planet, enjoying Supernatural success that shows no signs of slowing down.
