Squeezetoy Win Pamela Anderson's Jam with Pam Contest
July 31, 2001 With help from a panel of celebrity judges, Pamela Anderson named rap/rock indie band Squeezetoy the
winner of Jam with Pam, the online music contest, hosted on
beer.com, to find the best unsigned band in North America. The panel of
judges included music lovers, Natalie Raitano, Pamela's co-star on her
television show, "V.I.P.," Kenna, rising musical star recently signed by
Flawless of the Interscope label, and Jeanette Jenkins, the only woman to win
NBC's "Fear Factor."
"The final round of Jam with Pam was really close. But in the end we just
had to go with Squeezetoy. They really know how to jam," said Pamela
Anderson. "Thanks to all the bands for taking a chance, and to all the fans
for helping Jam with Pam and beer.com discover Squeezetoy, who I think is the
hottest new band around."
Pamela and her friends met recently in Los Angeles at a private party to
vote on the three finalists. Pamela selected the top MP3s after more than
600,000 fans voted for their favorites from over 950 songs submitted.
As victor, Squeezetoy will play at the Rolling Rock Town Fair 2.0 on
August 4, 2001, a daylong music event and interactive festival featuring Stone
Temple Pilots, among other notable bands, and will have a CD professionally
recorded in Los Angeles. The two other finalists were Counterbalance from
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and pinch from Chicago, Illinois, USA.
"With music industry leaders bombarded with thousands of unsolicited CDs
every year, bands fight tough battles just to get noticed," said Aidan Tracey,
general manager, beer.com. "With an authentic battle of the bands program like
beer.com's Jam with Pam, bands get a real shot at making it in the big leagues
because music fans vote for their favorites. This means the winning band will
have many supporters who will want to hear them play."
"We are ecstatic! Winning beer.com's Jam with Pam finally gives us the
chance to put it all on the line and do what we do best -- make awesome music,"
said Daniel Dickerson, bassist, Squeezetoy. "Getting to play alongside our
favorite bands, meet Pamela Anderson, and record an album in Los Angeles are
overwhelming thoughts. Only in rock and roll can something like this happen."
Fusing crunch, funk, classical guitar and hip-hop beats to create their sound, Squeezetoy cites 311, Rage Against the Machine, and Outkast, as
their musical influences. Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Squeezetoy
consists of lead vocalist Jason Martin, drummer, Zack Johnson; bassist, Daniel
Dickerson; guitarist, Brian Dickerson; vocalist Omatade Adeniyi; and, DJ John
Yu (J.U.). Together for two years, the band has performed at music festivals,
clubs and theatres on the East Coast.
To enter the contest, unsigned bands uploaded an MP3 file to www.jamwithpam.com from March 15, 2001, to May 31, 2001. Music lovers
voted for their favorites in three qualifying rounds that took place over
three months. Each round produced a "Six Pack" of songs from which Pamela
selected one each "Six Pack" to go to the final grand prize round. Another contest is slated for 2002.
