U2 Sell Out Historic Second Slane Castle Show
July 10, 2001 U2 today became the first band in history to announce a second date in Slane Castle, County Meath, and all 80,000 tickets sold out in 94 minutes.
Promoters SFX and MCD confirmed at 1 p.m. that Meath County Council had
granted permission for the additional date on September 1st. Uniquely, on the
advice of the police and Ticketmaster, tickets went on sale immediately in the
interests of public safety. Tickets were sold in 65 outlets throughout
Ireland, with 58% of sales made in person, 22% by telephone and 20% over the
internet.
In announcing the event, U2 and the promoters thanked Irish Prime Minister
Bertie Aherne, Minister Noel Dempsey and other Statutory Authorities, the
police and the residents of Slane for their roles in allowing the granting of
the license for this event. They went on to thank U2 fans throughout the
country for their continued support.
U2 manager Paul McGuinness, speaking from Europe on the Elevation Tour
2001 said, "We took off from Copenhagen at 1.00 p.m. as tickets went on sale. By
the time we landed in Stockholm at 2.30 the show was completely sold out. We
are thrilled."
U2 will be supported on September 1st by Moby, Foo Fighters, Nelly Furtado
and Dara.
