Aerosmith's Steven Tyler Gives Alex Band of the Calling a Surprise Birthday Treat

June 13, 2002 — Aerosmith's Steven Tyler didn't jump out of a cake, but he might as well have.... The Calling's frontman, Alex Band had no idea that Tyler, one of the hosts at the Y-100 Summer Splash in Miami on June 7, had secretly arranged to join the band on a cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" during their set.

Alex Band was kept clueless until just before show time, when Tyler, a self-confessed Calling fan, came backstage to hang out with the band and make the birthday announcement. Soon after, following renditions of the Calling's hits "Wherever You Will Go" and "Adrienne," Alex invited "a bum they had found on the side of the road" to join them onstage. Tyler walked out, gave the signal to bassist Billy Mohler, and the familiar riff of "Walk This Way" lit up the arena as the band ripped through the rock and roll anthem in front of 14,000 fans.

The Calling's debut alnbum, Camino Palmero, is certified gold and approaching platinum status. The second single from the album, "Adrienne," is currently receiving radio airplay across the country. The band has been nominated for three 2002 Teen Choice Awards including Choice Breakout Artist, Choice Love Song for 'WYWG' and Choice Rock Track ("Adrienne"), airing Aug. 19 on Fox.

In other Aerosmith news, the band's 1975 release, Toys in the Attic, has been certified eight times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album features classics such as "Sweet Emotion," "Walk This Way," and "Big Ten Inch Record." It has shipped eight-million copies to U.S. retailers since its April 1975 release.

Aerosmith's double-disc career retrospective, O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits, will hit stores July 2. It will be available with four different 3-D album covers and will include the Boston band's best recordings as well as two new tracks, "Girls of Summer" and "Lay It Down."

O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits commemorates the band's 30th anniversary. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, Aerosmith were recently selected for an MTV "Icon" event and is the subject of a special VH1 2-hour "Behind The Music" episode, premiering July 5. Aerosmith are one of only five bands to have received the American Music Awards' International Artist Award. The group will perform live at the World Cup in Japan on June 27 and will embark on a major tour in August.

Aerosmith have sold more than 75 million albums in the U.S. over the course of a career spanning three decades. Crossing generation gaps, Aerosmith's fan base ranges in age from six to sixty. They are the only rock & roll band to get consistent airplay on MTV and the classic rock radio outlets.

And they're still doing it with the original line-up -- Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), Brad Whitford (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass) and Joey Kramer (drums).
