Bowie Performs a Private Show for Fans at NYC's Roseland
June 12, 2002
David Bowie played a sold-out show for 3,200 BowieNet members last night at Roseland in NYC -- marking the June 11th release of his new album, Heathen. Although it was billed as a show for BowieNet members only, celebrities -- who always seem to have free access -- were in the house. Stars in the audience included Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum), Jimmy Fallon, Steven Van Zandt, Marky Ramone and artists Julian Schnabel and Jeff Koons.
Bowie performed two full albums in sequence in their entirety, 1977's seminal Low and the newly released Heathen. Both were produced by Tony Visconti.
Bowie was backed by Sterling Campell (drums), Gail Ann Dorsey
(bass/backing vocals), Mike Garson (keyboards), Gerry Leonard (guitar), Mark
Plati (rhythm guitar), Catherine Russell (backing keyboards/backing vocals)
and Earl Slick (guitar). In addition to the two albums, he also performed classics such as "Hallo Spaceboy,"
"Ashes to Ashes," "Fashion" and "I'm Afraid of Americans."
Next up is a trip to London's annual Meltdown, where Bowie -- this year's festival director -- will
perform, June 29, at the Royal Festival Hall. This will be followed by performances at a number of
European festivals, beginning July 3 at Kristinansand, Norway's
Quart Festival, through July 18 at the Montreux, Switzerland Jazz Festival.
Bowie then returns to the States for the Area2 tour, starting July 28 in
Washington, DC and visiting 12 cities throughout the summer, ending August 16
in Seattle. The trek also features tour founder Moby along with Busta Rhymes,
Carl Cox and many others.
