"SqueezeBox" was an underground rock-n-roll party created by a group of gay men in the 1990s. They wanted a place to go where they could listen to hardcore, punk, glam, and alternative rock, and see live bands perform without feeling threatened by the often discriminatory environment of rock clubs. What resulted was a "scene" which hadn't been seen in New York nightlife since the days of Max's Kansas City, the Mudd Club, and the Peppermint Lounge.

Bringing New York rock-n-roll history to life on the big screen, the soon-to-be-released film tells the story of Squeezebox (and what stories to tell!) complete with celebrity performances and interviews galore.

The producers of SqueezeBox, the Movie, have ignored the usual publicity route of mailing trailers and proposals to investors, studios, and distributors. Instead, they've come up with a grassroots approach to promoting their film. By screening their trailer at clubs, events and before concerts around New York City, the trailer seems much more like an opening act than a film. Thus, it's generated a local ground swell more akin to a rising local band than a documentary film.

And the effect has been amazing. After watching how the crowds reacted, the producers decided to invite distributors to a screening, more in the style of band managers luring A&R types to a gig. The trailer was screened before Andrew W.K.'s performance at the Roxy, May 26, 2002, giving distributors the opportunity to see firsthand how a room full of MTV kids would respond to the material.

Stay tuned for the results.
