Stone Temple Pilots Make Chart Debut and Surprise Performances
June 26, 2001 Shangri-LA DEE DA, the new album from Stone Temple Pilots, flew into the number nine spot in its debut week on the new SoundScan current albums sales chart and on next week's Billboard 200 (issue dated 7/7). This marks the Southern Californian band's fourth consecutive top-ten debut.
The top-ten ranking comes on the heels of last week's whirlwind promotional itinerary in NYC. The non-stop schedule -- including the Howard Stern Show and some in-store appearances -- concluded with a pair of surprise live performances in NY, and then LA. On Friday, June 22nd, the band was the unannounced special guest at K-ROCK's fifth annual Dysfunctional Family Picnic at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York. The sold-out festival saw STP performing five songs -- including the current hit single, "Days of the Week" -- with lead singer Scott Weiland costumed in full drag regalia as Hedwig, the lead character from the Off-Broadway rock musical and upcoming motion picture, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
The next night saw STP performing a surprise set at the ninth annual KROQ Weenie Roast at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, California. The hometown performance was hailed by the Los Angeles Times' Steve Hochman, who noted that "Weiland's stage dynamics and STP's still-growing catalog of strong material both evoke and reinvigorate classic rock values associated with such giants as Led Zeppelin and David Bowie." Ben Wener of the Orange County Register wrote: "STP
proved (again) what the faithful knew: that it is the hottest, most energizing live band today."
Last night, Stone Temple Pilots played a special KROQ-sponsored free club concert at L.A.'s world-famous Roxy. The band's only other official U.S. live date will be Saturday, August 4th, when they'll headline the Rolling Rock Town Fair in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. A full-scale tour of North America is tentatively set for the fall. In late August, STP will head to Europe for performances at festivals in Portugal, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and other countries. The band will also play a trio of highly anticipated headline dates in the UK, starting off August 21st at the London Astoria.
"Days Of The Week," the first single from Shangri-LA DEE DA, debuted as the number-one most-added track at a variety of formats. The single's companion video -- directed by Kevin
Kerslake, known for STP's "Interstate Love Song" and "Vasoline"
clips -- had its premiere last week on MTV's Total Request Live, and is now
in all-day rotation at the network, as well as in "Crankin'" rotation at MTV
2, and "Large" rotation at VH1.
