June 5, 2000 A full-on revival of all things Spinal Tap is beginning this summer. This is Spinal Tap, the classic
rockumentary Newsweek calls, "The funniest movie ever made about rock and roll," is being re-released in theaters and on special edition DVD/VHS by MGM Home Entertainment, in association with European film studio, STUDIOCANAL.
Other activities include personal appearances on VH1; the debut of a much anticipated, newly recorded single; Listen.com promotion, college screenings, as well as a star-studded Hollywood fanfest at the famed House of Blues.
Arriving on September 12, the videocassette of This Is Spinal Tap will be available for $14.95 with the DVD priced at $29.98. Prior to the film's availability in stores, the film This Is Spinal Tap will be re-released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, through a special arrangement with STUDIOCANAL, in select
theaters across the nation. www.spinaltap.com is tracking the comeback.
MGM used the film's original elements to create a new digital transfer, remixed by Spinal Tap and presented for the first time in 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. The DVD will include more than one hour of additional scenes taken from 30 hours of original camera negative unearthed by STUDIOCANAL in 1996 from a salt mine in Kansas. Die-hard fans will relish the fact that much of this material has never been seen before.
June 22, Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) will be featured live on the hit VH1 show, "The List." This appearance will be the first occasion the band has performed together in years. To keep these "bad boys of rock" in line, VH1 has secured Polymer Records Artist Relations rep Bobbi Flekman (Fran Drescher) as host of "The List," while special guest drummer Mick Fleetwood will be filling in due to the presumed death of Tap's latest drummer. Later in the summer, VH1 will air a special "Where Are They Now?" dedicated entirely to Spinal Tap.
