A Perfect Circle Storms Onto Chart with Highest Debuting First Album Ever From a Rock Band

Mer De Noms Bows in at Number 4 With Almost 200,000 Units Sold First Week

June 2, 2000 – A Perfect Circle has made history today with an amazing chart debut, the highest album chart entry ever for a rock band's first album.

A Perfect Circle's Mer De Noms (Virgin Records America) blasted into the Billboard Top 200 to grab the Number Four slot, selling 188,034 copies in its first week.

The success of APC has been fueled by a ferocious single "Judith," which is receiving major support from radio as well as from the video channels. The single is Top 5 at some of the most influential radio stations across the country, including KNDD, WAAF, CIMX, and KXPK, and Top 10 at WXRK, WBCN, KIOZ, WXDX, among others. It is also receiving major spins from KROQ, KXXR, KITS, and WFNX.

The video for "Judith" is receiving intense support from the three major video channels MTV, VH1, and M2. It was directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, The Game, Seven) who, after hearing the album, signed on to direct the clip for "Judith," his first music video in over four years.

A Perfect Circle have also been embraced by the music press. Among some of the key outlets that have already prominently featured the band are: Rolling Stone, Spin, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Alternative Press. Entertainment Weekly gave Mer De Noms an A- in its June 2 issue, describing the group's music as one featuring "guitar shrapnel with genuinely pretty melodies and frilly production flourishes – kinda like a neo-Metallica, but with cojones." The band has already appeared on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" May 16, a week before the album hit stores.

For seven weeks before the record was available, the band has been on a major US tour, performing with Nine Inch Nails on their "Fragile 2.0" tour. APC will be touring with NIN until June 18; the band will hit the road on their own tour later this year.

The impressive chart bows have not been limited to the US Billboard chart. Mer De Noms has also debuted Top Five in Australia and Canada, where it debuted at Number 2 and Number 5, respectively.

Comments Nancy Berry, vice chairman, Virgin Music Group Worldwide, "We are extremely proud of A Perfect Circle, and thrilled with this great debut. The band has worked tirelessly on Mer De Noms, and they deserve this success. The international Virgin companies have mounted a tremendous marketing effort, and we look forward to continued and even greater success for the album."
