The Tragically Hip Announce New Album and Tour

May 16, 2002 — The Tragically Hip are set to release their next album, In Violet Light, on Zoë/Rounder Records, June 11th. It will be released the same day in Canada on Universal Records. So it is only fitting that the Canadian fivesome make plans to hit the road soon thereafter. The band has already scheduled 20 dates beginning in Philadelphia, June 26th (see other dates below).

In Violet Light producer Hugh Padgham (Sting, Genesis, David Bowie) and engineer Terry Manning (Led Zeppelin, Shakira, Lenny Kravitz) both sought to capture the band's live experience in the recording of the album. Manning says, "Ultimately, on the album, they sound pretty much like they do live. You've got great lyrics and a great voice singing over great music. I think In Violet Light reminds us of why they got into doing this in the first place: They love playing live, and they love getting in front of an audience and connecting with it. You capture that, and it makes you feel 18 again."

The first single from In Violet Light will be "It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken." It will go for radio adds June 17th.

Over the course of their 18-year history, the Tragically Hip have released eight albums and one EP.

The Tragically Hip are Robby Baker (guitar), Gordon Downie (vocals), Johnny Fay (drums), Paul Langlois (guitar, vocals), and Gord Sinclair (bass, vocals).
