Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Announce East and Midwest Dates of Summer Tour
May 10, 2001 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have announced a second leg of summer tour dates, June 27-July 21, throughout the East and Midwest. These new dates
follow the previously announced May 9 - June 2 concerts in the Western U.S., Southwest and the Pacific Coast.
The second leg will take Petty and his bandmates -- Mike Campbell (guitars),
Howie Epstein (bass, vocals) and Benmont Tench (keyboards) with longtime
associates Scott Thurston (guitars, harmonica) and drummer Steve Ferrone -- through 15 cities, beginning in Scranton, Pennsylvania and wrapping up in Indianapolis. Fans can purchase tickets for these shows online at tompetty.com.
Last week (May 4, 2001), Petty told USA Today's Edna Gundersen that he's
been writing songs for a new release, but is taking time off to tour
"because I just feel like playing. This group is so good, it's a crime not
to take them out." Petty also revealed that the set list, in addition to
hits and rarities, will consist of "songs we haven't played in 10 or 15
years, popular songs that we laid down... I'm going to play whatever I feel
like and whatever makes the best show."
The Wallflowers will open the first run of dates through May 21 in Dallas,
to be replaced by Steve Earle and The Dukes for the remainder of the first
leg, ending June 2 in Las Vegas. An opening act will soon be named for the
second leg.
