Smashing Pumpkins to Break Up

May 23, 2000 – In a call made to Los Angeles radio station KROQ today, lead vocalist Billy Corgan announced that the Smashing Pumpkins will break up. A spokesperson for the band at New York's Annie Ohayon Media Relations later confirmed Corgan's statements.

Corgan told KROQ listeners that the band will complete its "The Sacred and Profane Tour 2000," which brought them to Los Angeles's Universal Amphitheater that night. They will honor a string of dates planned in Europe, Japan, Canada, and possibly South America. And they'll still go ahead with scheduled TV appearances. Corgan also promised fans additional music, saying that during the summer the group would try to polish up some songs that didn't make the cut for their recent release MACHINA/the machines of God. They hope to release these tunes on a future CD and a live recording remains possible as well.
