Marilyn Manson's New Posthuman Record Label Signs Its First Artist
May 18, 2000 DC Goth-rockers Godhead have signed to Marilyn Manson's Priority/EMI-distributed Posthuman Records. The band is the first signing to Marilyn Manson’s Posthuman label. The agreement clearly demonstrates the increasingly crucial role that the Internet and other non-traditional marketing efforts are playing in today's music industry.
Jason Miller, the band's tall, striking lead singer, worked hard to promote his band over the Net, accessing an entire network of gothic kids online over the past two years and participating in many vampire-type events, both online and off. The two worlds, both real and virtual, worked to complement each other. "With the Net, I can easily alert an entire village of Goths in any given area that we are touring in their hometown and then easily maintain close contact with them after the show," explained Mr. Miller. "The Web is an essential tool for developing a real fan base." The savvy Goth also managed to hook up online with KMFDM superstar John "Serv-o" DeSalvo who later assisted with the band's second U.S. album, Power Tool Stigmata.
"There's no doubt that the Web contributed immensely to the success of Godhead's career," said Richard Gottehrer, Godhead's producer and the CEO of the Orchard, the largest supplier of music to Internet stores. "They are an immensely talented group who really knew how to market themselves well. The Net just took them there faster." In fact, when the album was released in 1998, CMJ said that even Scott Weiland (of STP fame) would be "green with envy" over Jason's singing talents.
