The Toilet Boys to Be Featured in Upcoming Documentary
April 18, 2002
NYC's own Toilet Boys are set to be featured in an
upcoming feature-length documentary called "Last Night at SqueezeBox..."
which chronicles the underground rock and roll scene in New York City during the
1990s. The movie is filled with performances and interviews of many
downtown New York legends and notable celebrities such as John Waters,
Debbie Harry, Jayne County, John Cameron
Mitchell and Stephen Trask (of Hedwig fame) and Joey Ramone, seeing the
'Boys in fine company.
This film tells the story of a party called "SqueezeBox," created by a group
of gay men who wanted a place to go where they could listen to hardcore,
punk, glam, and alternative rock, and see live bands perform without feeling
threatened by the often discriminatory environment of rock clubs. What
resulted was a "scene" which hadn't been seen in New York nightlife since
the days of Max's Kansas City, the Mudd Club, and the Peppermint Lounge.
SqueezeBox was the initial support system for many hot bands: SpaceHog and
the Toilet Boys to name just two.
The documentary captures many colorful characters that were outcasts in
their communities. The freedom and acceptance found at SqueezeBox was
inspiring. The story is told from the perspective of the seven-year anniversary
and final SqueezeBox bash that happened in May 2001. It's an exciting
look into a rock-and-roll party where all were accepted. SqueezeBox was a
place where sexual barriers were challenged and dreams came true.
The movie is tentatively slated for this summer.
