Silverchair's Number One Album in Australia to Hit States July 30th
April 16, 2002
Silverchair debuted at #1 in their native Australia with their new album, Diorama. The band's first new album in three years, it marks their fourth collection to enter the charts at #1, earning Silverchair the distinction of having more top-charting debuts than any other Australian artist (including
compatriots AC/DC and INXS). Just a
week after its release, Diorama has already gone platinum Down Under.
The CD is slated to be
released in the U.S., July 30th. It will be preceded by the first single,
"The Greatest View," which has already reached #1 at rock and alternative
radio in Australia and is a top five pop hit. Silverchair are scheduled to
pay a promotional visit to the States in June, with a U.S. tour to follow
the album's release (dates TBA).
The band's fourth album of new material, it was recorded in the fall of 2001 at Sydney's Studio 301 with producer David Bottrill (Tool, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson).
Setting out for new musical territory, the band explored a range of
instruments and styles. To that end, they enlisted several other musicians
for the project, most notably the legendary Van Dyke Parks, who contributed
arrangements for orchestra, brass, and woodwinds on three tracks. Parks
has worked with artists such as the Beach Boys, U2, and Fiona Apple.
Of Silverchair, he notes that "Daniel Johns is the
most talented person I've worked with since Brian Wilson."
Silverchair (singer/guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou, and drummer Ben
Gillies) are Australia's most successful contemporary rock band.
The group has had more top twenty hits during the past five years than any
other artist Down Under and they have sold over six million albums
worldwide.
