Dave Matthews' Record Label Pens Deals with Chris Whitley and Ben Kweller

Whitley's Rocket House Set for June 5 Release; Kweller Heads Into the Studio

Success Continues with David Gray's White Ladder

April 3, 2001 – According To Our Records (ATO), the independent label formed in early 2000 by Dave Matthews, manager Coran Capshaw, and long-time Matthews/Capshaw associates Michael McDonald and Chris Tetzeli, is pleased to announce the addition of both Chris Whitley and Ben Kweller to the artist roster. Says ATO's Michael McDonald about the signings, "We've spent a good while looking for artists that fit what we're all about – great songwriting, great live show and great spirit. We couldn't be happier to have Chris and Ben join our family."

On June 5, ATO Records will release Rocket House, Chris Whitley's first studio recording since 1997's Terra Incognita, and the second release from the label. Produced by Tony Mangurian (Luscious Jackson), the album's 11 original tracks reveal a mature Whitley continuing to explore his range while moving in a less aggressive direction.

Ben Kweller, a 19-year-old Texas born Brooklynite who fronted the '90s pop/punk band Radish, describes his music as "electric-acoustic power-pop, punk, sing-along new-school folk mixed with Texas and toy keyboards." He has toured the U.S. and abroad over the past year with artists such as Jeff Tweedy, Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield. BK is currently writing songs for his ATO Records debut, which is planned for a late summer release.

David Gray's breakthrough recording White Ladder was recently certified platinum in the United States, and the new single, "Please Forgive Me," is enjoying early success at Modern Rock & Hot A/C. On April 12, David Gray will kick off his North American tour. During the 33-date run, he and his band will headline multiple sold-out shows at venues such as Radio City Music Hall in New York City and the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. A "Late Show with David Letterman" booking has also been confirmed for May 2.
