Bramhall at the Crossroads for All-star Recording Session with Eric Clapton and B.B. King, as Ace Guitarist Preps Tour with Roger Waters, Reaps Success of Jellycream CD
April 25, 2000 Doyle Bramhall II found himself the center of attention at a recent gathering of guitar greats, as he jammed with living legends Eric Clapton and B.B. King for a Clapton recording session of Bramhall's composition "I Wanna Be," as well as another Bramhall original, "Marry You," both featured on Doyle's 1999 RCA release Jellycream.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bramhall said of the session with Clapton, "He invited me down to the studio ... and the first scene I see is B.B. King sitting there with Eric and his band, and they were playing 'I Wanna Be' ... it was surreal, B.B. playing his great stuff on my song."
Bramhall himself stuck around to play on the sessions for a Clapton-King duets album, set for release later this year. Bramhall has also been enlisted by another rock legend, Roger Waters, to join his band once again, as lead guitarist and vocalist for the U.S. leg of the Pink Floyd founder's "In the Flesh 2000" tour. The tour opens in Tampa, FL, June 2 and winds up in Providence, RI, July 16 (see below for a complete itinerary). Bramhall first joined Roger Waters as lead guitarist and vocalist on last year's summer tour. His guitar work can also be heard on the forthcoming release by Waters.
Also teaming up with Bramhall in the Waters band are top-flight musicians Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar), Snowy White (guitar), Graham Broad (drums), Jon Carin (keyboards), Andy Wallace (keyboards), Katie Kissoon (vocals), Susannah Melvoin (vocals) and P.P. Arnold (vocals). Bramhall continues to find life creamy smooth these days as his album Jellycream wins fans across the musical spectrum. His latest single, the soulful rocker "I'm Leavin'," is a bittersweet tale of love gone bad.
Jellycream has met with unbridled enthusiasm since its release. Associated Press stated, "It's a guitar-driven recording that showcases the six-string talents of Bramhall" ... Guitar Player said Bramhall could be the one "with the chops and fire to carry Stevie Ray Vaughan's torch into the next millennium," while the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram hailed his music as a "savvy blues/rock/pop hybrid that gets better with every listen." Bramhall recently performed on the popular PBS series, "Austin City Limits" and on "The Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn."
