Peter, Paul & Mary Annouce Tour Dates To Celebrate Trio's 40th Anniversary
April 20, 2000 Celebrating their 40th Anniversary, singer-songwriters and Warner Bros. Records recording artists Peter, Paul & Mary have announced their plans for a North American tour commemorating their remarkable four decades of performing together. Known as one of the prime innovators of the sixties folk-music renaissance, Peter, Paul & Mary are set to perform exciting new material as well as an assemble of their timeless classics, which span the trio's illustrious career as one of the most politically active and socially conscious groups in music.
In addition, the trio will be performing as part of the Earth Day 30th Anniversary celebration taking place in Washington, D.C. Saturday, April 22nd. Peter, Paul & Mary will be joining artists (among others) James Taylor, Carole King, David Crosby, Chevy Chase, Ted Danson, Melanie Griffith and master of ceremonies Leonardo DiCaprio for an afternoon of performances and speeches that continues a worldwide commitment to an ecologically sustainable future.
Peter, Paul & Mary kicked off their 40th year together with a city tour of Japan earlier this spring. Their Japanese tour found the trio playing to loyal fans from four generations in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya among other cities.
It was 40 years ago this year when three folk singers combined talents and
made their debut at Greenwich Village's Bitter End coffeehouse. What began
there has become a legacy, shared by people all over the world who are now on
a first-name basis with Peter, Paul & Mary. With many albums, Grammy awards
and esteemed television shows behind them, they continue to embrace the family
of folk music, singing new songs written by the "old soul" poets of today as
well as traditional ballads drawn from the great folk heritage they still
honor and enjoy.
Their latest CD, Songs Of Conscience & Concern, was released last year and
features an unusual collection of 15 evocative songs, culled from nine different albums (of the 20 they have released over their 40-year association.) Peter, Paul & Mary chose to include personal favorites, "hidden treasures," not necessarily their most famous songs, but songs that have especially moved and inspired them, although for anyone who
lived through the '60s and '70s, many of these songs are instantly recognizable. The CD also includes one newly recorded song, "Don't Laugh At Me," which addresses violence, ridicule and disrespect among children. An in-school program that combines a CD of their song, a moving video and a classroom teachers guide will be launched this coming fall in over 3,000 schools. Additionally, a similar program will be distributed to over 2,500 summer camps this may. This ambitious project attests to the Trio's continued activism and belief that music can provide a platform to address important social concerns, laying the groundwork for change.
