Dr. Dre and Eminem Take Three Awards Each at the Annual Online Hip-hop Awards in New York City
April 14, 2000 Wednesday night, April 12th, the Online Hip-hop Awards 2000 took place at the banquet hall of Cipriani's Restaurant in New York City. The worldwide multimedia webcast was co-hosted by LL Cool J and DJ Angie Martinez of Hot 97 and included presenters such as Grand Master Flash and performances by artists such as Rah Digga, Busta Rhymes, Denton of the Outsidaz, Fifth Platoon, Dead Prez, the Eastsidaz featuring Jayo Felony, Cypress Hill and the Product G&B featuring Wyclef Jean.
Dr. Dre and Eminem were the big winners of the night. All of the winners are listed below. Mos Def of Black Star received the Amadou Diallo Revolutionary Award, presented by the Reverend Al Sharpton, for his embodiment of hip-hop's revolutionary spirit.
The Online Hip-hop Awards is an annual ceremony established in 1996 by the
founders of SOHH.com, the web's largest hip-hop community. This year's event
was presented in partnership with Yahoo Music, www.twec.com and Hot 97 FM.
The event not only recognizes artists at the forefront of the industry,
but also web developers and sites taking a leading role in shaping and
promoting hip-hop culture today and for the future. Last year's event
attracted nearly one-half million votes and was viewed by thousands of online
users via webcast. Numbers are still being tabulated for this year's awards,
but initial figures indicate a substantial increase.
Each year, the Online Hip-hop Awards seeks to contribute to a worthy cause that will benefit urban
communities. In 1999 and once again this year, the Online Hip-hop Awards donated a portion of the
proceeds to MOUSE (www.nymouse.org), a NY-based not-for-profit organization providing
volunteer manpower and technical support to wire inner-city public schools for the Internet and
technology. In conjunction with the Online Hip-hop Awards 2000, students from MOUSE high schools will
take part in a special auditorium featuring their favorite rap artists to promote Internet usage with
inner-city students.
