April 12, 2000 Elizabeth Birch, the Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), announced four additional entertainers to the line-up of Equality Rocks, a concert being held on Saturday, April 29th in Washington, DC at RFK Stadium, on the eve of the Millennium March on the nation's Capitol. Singer/pianist Michael Feinstein, singer Chaka Khan, actress Kathy Najimy and singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright have been added to the star-filled lineup.
"I am so pleased with the way the show is developing," commented Ms. Birch in making the announcement. "The support of such an eclectic group of powerful and inspiring performers will mean so much to our community."
In recent years, the violence and hatred unleashed among young people has shaken the nation. HRC and Equality Rocks are dedicated to creating new standards of tolerance and understanding. HRC is committed to fostering an atmosphere of respect for difference and basic human rights for all. Equality Rocks hopes to address the climate in which long-term prejudice and bias is formed. The message of the event is that people in every setting and institution have a responsibility to build a better nation for all young people.
HRC will also welcome special guest Betty DeGeneres, mother of Ellen DeGeneres. In addition, Judy and Dennis Shepard, parents of slain Wyoming student Matthew Shepard, will attend, along with Stella and James Byrd Sr., parents of James Byrd Jr. who was dragged to his death in Jasper, Texas. Also in attendance will be Ismael Ileto, brother of Joseph Ileto, the Filipino postal worker who was shot in Los Angeles, CA.
Other families that have endured hate crimes will also attend Equality Rocks. Net proceeds from the concert will go to benefit the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, well known for its educational programs.
More artists will be announced in weeks to come.
HRC envisions an America where lesbian and gay people are ensured of their basic equal rights and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community. HRC is dedicated to universal standards of fairness and equality for all people. The foundation provides related programs that educate and enhance America.
