Counting Crows Release First Two-Part Radio Single in 20 Years; "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" Part One Enters Top Ten AAA Charts Nationwide
April 4, 2000 Counting Crows have released a two-part single to radio for the song "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby," from their current platinum CD This Desert Life on DGC Records, marking the first time in 20 years that a single has been released in two parts.
The last time a musical act actually did this was Pink Floyd in 1980 for "Another Brick in the Wall." "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" is a seven-minute song that should be heard in its entirety. But for the purposes of current radio programming, it was a way to honor the material by releasing the song as a two-part single.
The concept was smart, because the single is currently in the top ten at the AAA radio format. A pro-CD single was shipped nationally with the full-length version of the song, as well as two parts of "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" on the same disc.
Counting Crows join a celebrated list of legendary artists and songs who have tested radio's time constraints by issuing a single cut with Part 1 and Part 2, including:
"Shout, Part 1" Isley Brothers (1959), #47
"Peppermint Twist, Part 1" Joey Dee & The Starlighters (1961), #1
"Fingertips, Part 2" Little Stevie Wonder (1963), #1
"American Pie, Part 1 & 2" Don McLean (1971), #1
"Keep on Truckin', Part 1" Eddie Kendricks (1973), #1
"That Lady Part 1" Isley Brothers (1973), #6
"Love Machine, Part 1" The Miracles (1975), #1
"Fight the Power, Part 1" Isley Brothers, (1975) #4
"Gotta Give It Up, Part 1" Marvin Gaye (1977), #1
"Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" Pink Floyd (1980), #1
And, the undisputed King of Part 1 and Part 2's, is James Brown:
"Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, Part 1," (1965) #8,
"Cold Sweat, Part 1," (1967) #7,
"Say It Loud, 'I'm Black And I'm Proud', Part 1," (1968) #10,
"Super Bad, Part 1 & Part 2" (1970) #13,
"Hot Pants, Part 1," (1971) #15, and more then thirty others.
Recorded in the hills of Hollywood, "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" from the CD This Desert Life has been certified Platinum. The band is currently on a European tour through the beginning of April. There is a highly anticipated summer American concert tour in the works.
