Les Claypool, Stewart Copeland and Trey Anastasio to Record
March 30, 2001 Les Claypool, Primus/Frog Brigade bassist, will head to Vermont this Sunday,
April 1 to meet up with Police drummer Stewart Copeland and Phish guitarist
Trey Anastasio at the Barn, the latter's recording studio. The trio will
spend most of April and May recording and mixing the debut CD of their
collaborative project, Oysterhead, which had its genesis in May, 2000 at the
New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
"The New Orleans show was an incredible experience," said Claypool. "We
sold out 3,000 seats in 12 minutes, tickets on eBay were going for two grand
a piece. Francis Ford Coppola was sitting on the side of the stage. It was
just an insane scene."
The Oysterhead debut will be out in the Fall on Elektra Records and will be
comprised of all original material written by Les, Stewart, and Trey.
Claypool, who has a keen aversion to sitting still, will have his Live
Frogs - Set 1 CD, recorded by his Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying
Frog Brigade group, released April 10 on his own Prawn Song label
(distributed by RED). Live Frogs - Set 2, which he recently finished
mixing, was recorded live last Fall at the Great American Music Hall in San
Francisco, and comprises the band's rendition of Pink Floyd's "Animals,"
from start to finish. Live Frogs - Set 2 will be released this summer.
The Frog Brigade, who the San Francisco Chronicle dubbed "one of the most
bizarre outfits to insinuate itself onto the rock-improv circuit," features
original Primus/Sausage guitarist Todd Huth, Skerik (Critters Buggin',
Tuatara) on saxophone, Jay Lane (Rat Dog/Sausage) on drums, Jeff Chimenti
(Rat Dog) on keyboards, and local San Francisco guitarist, Eenor.
