Phil Collins Wins Academy Award for Best Original Song The Oscar Follows a Grammy and Golden Globe Win This Year for Collins
March 27, 2000 Last night, Phil Collins took home the award for Best Original Song at the
72nd Annual Academy Awards (for his song "You'll Be in My Heart" from the animated film
Tarzan). Already this year, Collins received a Golden Globe and a Grammy for his work on the
Tarzan soundtrack.
Collins' fellow nominees for Best Original Song included Aimee Mann for "Save Me" from
Magnolia; Trey Parker and Marc Shaiman for "Blame Canada" from South Park: Bigger, Longer
And Uncut; "Music of the Heart" from Music of the Heart, written by Diane Warren and
performed by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan; and Randy Newman 's "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story
2, performed by Sarah McLachlan.
The Oscar event also included an all-star medley (under the stewardship of house musical director
Burt Bacharach) of previously nominated classics: "Everybody's Talking at Me," "Raindrops Keep
Falling on My Head" and "When You Wish Upon a Star" performed by Garth Brooks; "Shaft" by its
composer, the super-cool Isaac Hayes; "Over the Rainbow" and "The Way We Were" by Faith Hill;
"Alfie" by Dionne Warwick; "The Man That Got Away" by Queen Latifah; and "Secret Love," "I've Got
You Under My Skin" and "All the Way" by the legendary and always amazing Ray Charles.
In another musical highlight at the event, Oscar winner Robin Williams took the stage to perform
the controversial Best-song nominee "Blame Canada," from the animated film South Park: Bigger
Longer and Uncut. The show-stopping number began with Williams wearing a swatch of duct tape
across his mouth reflecting the song's censorship theme and ended with chorus line of
girls dressed like Mounties and Williams tearing off his suit jacket to reveal a T-shirt emblazoned
with a light-up "No Canada" symbol. Williams replaced original performer of "Blame Canada," former
South Park vocal actor Mary Kay Bergman. Bergman played all of the female characters on the show
until she took her own life last November.
