Nelly Furtado to Launch '2002 Burn in the Spotlight Tour'

Citizen Cope to Support on Select Dates

February 12, 2002

Singer-songwriter-guitarist-producer Nelly Furtado will begin her first headlining tour of major North American venues, which she's dubbed the "2002 Burn in the Spotlight Tour." Fellow genre-bender Citizen Cope will join her on select dates.

Furtado's debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, has been certified double platinum in the U.S., based largely on radio and video success for the songs "I'm Like A Bird" (Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100) and "Turn Off The Light" (Top 5). Her international sales, too, are approaching the two-million mark, with the exotic-sounding pop/hip-hop disc deemed triple platinum in Furtado's native Canada, double platinum in both Australia and New Zealand and platinum in the U.K., Ireland and Portugal (birthplace of the artist's parents). The album has earned gold status in Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Indonesia and Singapore.

The 23-year-old Furtado has also been nominated for numerous awards, including four Junos (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys); in the categories of Best New Solo Artist; Best Single, for "I'm Like A Bird"; Best Songwriter, for "I'm Like A Bird," "Turn Off The Light" and "...On The Radio (Remember The Days)"; and Best Producer, with Gerald Eaton and Brian West, for "I'm Like A Bird" and "Turn Off The Light."

Recently, Furtado was nominated for an American Music Award for Favorite New Artist and an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding New Artist.

Furtado's video clips for "I'm Like a Bird" (directed by Francis Lawrence) and "Turn Off The Light" (Sophie Muller) are in heavy rotation on MTV, VH1 and MTV2. The song "Turn Off The Light" received an extra boost from a remix by hip-hop producer Timbaland; a second video for the track reflects the refashioned version. Furtado recently shot a clip for "...On The Radio (Remember The Days)," slated to be the third radio track off Whoa, Nelly!.

Furtado's band on the "2002 Burning in the Spotlight Tour" includes bassist Dean Jarvis, guitarist Yurko Mychaluk, drummer Adrian Passarelli, keyboardists Joel Joseph and Kevin Saulnier and DJ Jasper "Lil Jaz" Gahunia.

Citizen Cope opened some of Furtado's previous headlining club dates. At those shows, Citizen Cope mastermind Clarence Greenwood presented stripped-down acoustic-oriented performances; on the upcoming tour, he'll front a full band.

You can catch Furtado and Cope (on selected dates) live at the following venues.
