Gorillaz Launch North American Tour
January 10, 2002
U.K. animated superstars Gorillaz the first platinum interactive rock band are
setting their sights on North America and are ready to kick some two-dimensional
ass here in the States. The band will perform a string of live dates from February 23 to March 8 (itinerary below), in shows that combine music, animation and technology.
Appealing to many from tech heads to teenyboppers, the group's self-described "zombie hip-hop" sound has garnered kudos from across the board. Time Magazine described their debut as the "most imaginative pop record of the year." The Grammys nominated them for "Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group" for their single "Clint Eastwood." And Gorillaz were also nominated for two MTV Awards, four Billboard Awards and the prestigious Mercury Prize and Shortlist Awards.
Needless to say, the members of Gorillaz Murdoc (bassist and part-time Satanist), 2-D (pretty-boy front man), Noodle (11-year-old Asian guitar princess) and Russel (hip-hop hard man from the U.S.) have become platinum-selling celebrities. The band recently recorded with Eminem's group, D12, and spent time in the studio with Redman.
