The MTV Awards are truly the root canal of all entertainment – except that it happens every damn year, not just once or twice in a lifetime. The usual flattering exchanges between the stars and the endless windbag acceptance speeches did prevail through the final Oscar ceremony of the current millennium. More so, it was nearly worth all the root-canal-like torment to catch a current glimpse of the exquisite Sophia Loren and to see Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow in her lovely pink gown. The evening's musical highlights included Whitney Houston and Maria Carey singing Oscar winner "When You Believe" from The Prince of Egypt.

Lauryn Hill wound up the big winner, taking home five awards including the gem: Album of the Year. Other positives to come from last night are victories for Madonna's Ray of Light for Best Pop Album, a nod that makes sense for a record that didn't fall into convention. Also, the still-progressive Beastie Boys winning Best Alternative Album for Hello Nasty is downright dandy, as was Sheryl Crow collecting Best Rock Album for her heralded The Globe Sessions.

AC/DC: Still Stiff After All These Years (NY Rock)

Technically squeaking, Stiff Upper Lip is the best-sounding album AC/DC have recorded since the glory daze of 1980's Back in Black and 1981's For Those About To Rock. No stranger to the band's sound, George Young also twiddled the knobs on such classic AC/DC albums as High Voltage, Let There Be Rock and Powerage. Which brings us back to present day AC/DC and their efforts to promote the Stiff Upper Lip CD.
