The Datsuns
at Irving Plaza, NYC

Get out of the fuckin' way, Strokes. The Datsuns are ready to run your over-hyped asses out of town. Picture this. Five underfed long hairs from Cambridge, New Zealand sporting bell bottoms, big-ass belt buckles, and enough hair to make Cousin It jealous. Throw in some Led Zep, AC/DC, Black Crowes, the wang-dang twanging of Ted Nugent and the dual leads of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and you get the drift.
At last year's CMJ fest, the band set off a feeding frenzy, as record execs and other industry captains popped boners over the group's buzz and bitchin' sounds. They eventually signed label V2's dotted line, toured with the likes of White Stripes, and are currently slated to headline the Siren Fest at Coney Island, this July 19th.
From the opener to the closing bell, as if they were weaned on Spinal Tap videos, the Datsuns pulled out every rock cliché in the book (sans the dry ice and exploding drummer). Singer/bassist Dolf functioned as the band's lightning rod to garage-rock heaven, while sidekicks Phil and Christian, stage left and right, shell shocked the crowd with their fuzzy guitar work. It all went down to the thunderous back beat of Matt on drums.

Dolf the band's pretty boy, who looks a little like Geddy Lee from Rush sneered and preened at the crowd like a spoiled brat. In tight pants and a well-pressed checkered shirt, he added just enough Mr. Clean to the retro-hippy unit.
The band jammed on tunes like "Lady" and "Motherfucker from Hell" off their debut, The Datsuns. Each number taking on the downtown grit of Motorhead, Iggy and the Stooges, and the best arena rock of the seventies. They ended their set with "Supergyration," which featured both guitarists duking out leads from various squirming states on the floor.
Clearing the path for the Datsuns' reckless abandon were openers, the Star Spangles. The New York City band has its own major label debut due soon.
