"This summer it's all about sticking together," teases American Pie 2's tagline. Equal parts credit and shame are due director J.B. Rogers for sticking to the rude-and-crude formula that made the 1999 original such a success. It isn't Planet of the Apes, but there's plenty of monkey business, nubile nudity and a cornucopia of crudities guaranteed to satisfy anyone who will admit to liking the first film.
For better or perverse, American Pie 2 is as much keg-fuelled fun as its predecessor. This time around, the cast of hyper-hormonal high school post graduates reunite after spending their freshman year attending different colleges. Fans of the first movie will be happy to see Jim (Jason Biggs) Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) Stifler (Seann William Scott) and the rest of the goofy gang a little older, but certainly no wiser. Despite two semesters of higher education, the guys have learned little about the ways of the world such as how to unhook a bra with one hand, the difference between super glue and sexual lubricant, or even to lock your door when entertaining a girl of the non-inflatable variety.
Summer school be damned, Jimbo and the boys are determined to get over the hump of their social awkwardness and to make the most of their time together. So they do what any bunch of likeable dorks would do. Being cut from the cloth of such teen classics as Porky's, Caddyshack and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, they rent a huge house by a resort lake, get jobs as house painters (for a pair of "potential lesbos") and plan a party.
Hamlet it isn't. Unfortunately, Shakespeare would have been much more popular had he written such timeless dialogue as "Don't forget your penis cream," "Fist yourself" and the soon to be immortal "F- me geek!"
Helping to keep the audience pumped up for the potty-mouthed proceedings is an up-tempo punk-rock soundtrack boasting the best from frat-house favorites like Offspring, Green Day and Weezer. Speaking of bathroom humor, it's only fitting that New York City's glam gods the Toilet Boys get to share a piece of the Pie with their androgynous anthem "Another Day in the Life."
What more can you really say about this movie? You either think grossed-out gags about footballs in the crotch, trumpets up the butt, and getting peed on are hysterical or you don't. You certainly can't fault the movie for not delivering what it promises. Though there could have been more of Mena "American Beauty" Suvari, who appears all too briefly as Heather, the sole character exiled to study in Europe for the summer while her friends are having the summer of their lives.
In the end, American Pie 2 offers a few requisite lessons that give it at least a Vaseline-thin layer of socially redeeming value. 1. Remember, it's important to be comfortable with yourself and your sexuality in any situation, no matter how big a geek you actually are. 2. Make the most of the time you and your friends have together before life changes, scattering everyone to the winds of fate. 3. As for sticking together, it can be the best part of life, except where body parts are concerned, so always keep a little "Crazy Bond" dissolving paint thinner on hand, just in case.
