One of the best things to come out of Woodstock ’99 – for us anyway – was Mason Hawk’s interview with Buckcherry, a band we’ve become rather fond of as of late.

    NYROCK:

There's a buzz about you guys now. A lot of people expect you to keep moving in a pretty solid direction. How does that feel from your position? Is it a lot of pressure or is it a lot of fun?

            YOGI:

There's no pressure for us. We all have different influences, but we all seem to rock well together. We just do what we do best.

    NYROCK:

How long has the band been together?

              J.B.:

About four years.

    NYROCK:

Is the line-up the same as the original?

              J.B.:

Yeah, same line-up. We just got Yogi [guitarist] a year ago. Then we started the touring stuff. The chemistry is there.

    NYROCK:

Were you happy with the set today?

            YOGI:

Yeah, absolutely.

    NYROCK:

How does a gig like this compare with other outdoor festivals?

       DEVON:

Outdoor shows are usually unpredictable. Usually things will start flying off. Things will get unplugged. But we were really lucky today. We thank God for that.

Just the whole "doing Woodstock" thing. You have these expectations. What you try to do is, you try to squash them and make it feel like it's a regular show so you can have a good time. The bigger the show is the more the exchange of energy there is with the audience. So it makes it a lot more fun for us and a lot more fun for them.

    NYROCK:

Are you doing a lot of touring now?

            YOGI:

Yeah, we just finished six weeks with Fuel. We finished that leg and now we just finished this; so we have a couple weeks of vacation and then we'll be heading to Europe for a couple of weeks.

       DEVON:

We're doing a video too on Tuesday. So we're supposed to have a vacation, but we kinda don't because we're here at Woodstock and then we have a video. A few days off and then we're going to Europe for two weeks. The day before Europe, we're doing the Conan O'Brien show. Then we're touring with Lenny Kravitz. So we're pretty busy.

    NYROCK:

What about the studio?

            YOGI:

It will probably be a year before we do another record.

    NYROCK:

Is that a little frustrating? The studio can be where your real creative forces all gel together. I'm sure a lot of people are pushing you to tour.

       DEVON:

We're continuing to write on the road. Even today we played a new song that will be on the next record. It's not that frustrating because we really have to promote this band.

    NYROCK:

Have you noticed the dynamics of the crowd change as your popularity grows?

       DEVON:

Yeah, you see a lot more people singing the lyrics. In the beginning, they were showing up because they were curious. Now, we seem to be getting a lot of fans. The radio airplay has helped a lot. If you saw today, when we played "Lit Up," our single, the crowd got a little crazy. That's great to see. We're going to be doing another single, which is just coming out, "For the Movies." I think we'll be able to pick up a bigger audience from there.

    NYROCK:

You mean it will be on a soundtrack?

              J.B.:

No, "For the Movies" is the name of the song. If you noticed, when we played "For the Movies" all the shirts came off. The breasts were flying.

            YOGI:

Yeah, they got silly.

    NYROCK:

So the overall experience of the band is a positive one?

            YOGI:

Yeah, absolutely.

       DEVON:

The chemistry is there and we're all healthy.

              J.B.:

We started out like every other band. Just playing in small clubs. Playing for the sound guy and the bartender. I think it hit us a couple of months ago. We were playing in Dallas and there was a big line outside of the club. I walked up to the people waiting in line and said, "Hey man, who are you here to see?" And they said, "Buckcherry!" I thought, "Get out of here. You're lying."

       DEVON:

Yeah, our shows are starting to sell out.

    NYROCK:

Is it bothersome if someone compares you to the Rolling Stones or Aerosmith?

       DEVON:

To me, personally, those are great bands. So it's a compliment.
