Interview with Deryck Whibley and Dave Baksh of Sum 41 by Talia Soghomonian

Continued from Page One...

NYROCK: What's your most embarrassing story?

DERYCK: Oh, there's too many! It's all harmless. It's not violent or mean or anything. It's just fun.

DAVE:

"Dude, it's so awesome when you stabbed that guy with the cocktail weenie."

...It's always in good humor.

NYROCK:

What's in your CD player now?

DERYCK:

Social Distortion.

DAVE:

What am I listening to (asking himself in Rodin's Thinker pose)? I just got a copy of the new Anthrax, so I'm listening to that a lot.

NYROCK:

If you could cover a song, what would it be?

DERYCK :

"Bruce Lee Vs. The Kiss Army" by Guttermouth.

NYROCK:

Do you play any covers live?

DERYCK:

No, not really. We might play that one tonight.

DAVE:

Yeah, maybe.

NYROCK:

You released three albums in two years. That's a lot...

DERYCK:

Yup.

NYROCK:

Do you work on new songs while on tour?

DERYCK:

Yeah, as much as I can. I always gotta write. I have all my recording studios in that box right here (points to a small black "suitcase").

DAVE:

Yeah, we're in a studio right now.

DERYCK:

I just set it up whenever I can and try to come up with just little ideas. I don't really write full songs on the road, just little parts. And then when I get home, I put it all together.

DAVE:

Which is good, because I can't write shit.

NYROCK:

So when your tour ends, you'll already have some material to work on?

DERYCK:

There's nothing planned. The album just came out, but it's probably safe to say we'll be working on a new record in the new year.

NYROCK:

On tour, is it safe to say that traveling can be a growth process. Or maybe a learning process?

DERYCK:

I think you just become more mature in a good way, not like we're really mature now. I mean, we still do stupid shit all the time. I think it makes you more aware of what's going on, because like I said before, when you're 18 or 19, you're just living in a little box that consists of going to school, going home, going to school, going home. And now, you're traveling all over the world. You're in different countries and different cultures. You'll be in one place one day that has a completely different culture and language and style of food, and then that night, you're in a completely different place again. So you just become aware that there are other things going on around you.

DAVE:

And you also learn to hate flying.

DERYCK:

We don't hate to fly 'cause we're afraid of it. It's just (both together) boring! It sucks. I can't stand it, just sitting there.

DAVE:

Sitting in the same seat for hours and hours and hours...

DERYCK:

Uncomfortable. We took a 16- or 17-hour flight the other day.

DAVE:

We went back and did a tailgating party for the Superbowl.

DERYCK:

Oh yeah, in San Diego.

DAVE:

That was ridiculous.

NYROCK:

Why?

DERYCK:

We had to take three planes that took 16 hours to get there to do five songs, get on a plane right after those five songs, come all the way back another 16 hours.

DAVE:

Which sucks 'cause there was going to be a great party.

DERYCK:

They had a couple of parties going on there.

NYROCK:

Tsk, tsk, and you missed them. Such a hard life you rock stars lead.

DERYCK:

That's what people don't realize is that you have to get up really early and then fly. You don't really get to party all the time. This party was probably going to be pretty good and it's probably a party that people would expect us to be at. Other bands do, I guess. We never seem to get to them.
