Stones over Manhattan, 5/17/02, by Glenn Emerstone

The Rolling Stones' blimp circled overhead a few times at the Bronx's Van Cortland Park as if it were really a led zeppelin. Full of dead weight, hot air and a few stones, it hurdled and bounced unevenly towards mother earth with the serenity and grace of an East Village wino.

Out rolled the Stones – Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ron Wood – onto an open field of 100 feisty, battling paparazzi, thirsty for blood and a coveted shot. The boys beamed and preened for the photogs, then made their way to the press tent where the media took on the former bad boys – many who are now grandpas.

Tour promoter Michael Cohl laid out the band's tour itinerary, which includes 32 dates of "dramatically different shows" in stadiums, arenas and clubs. For the year-long tour, the band will travel to Europe, Australia, Mexico and the Far East into 2003, including possibly their first concerts in China.

At the conference, Mick was the ringleader as always. He took on reporters' questions as Keith snickered like the class clown, Woody smiled and Watts looked shell-shocked from the bumpy ride.

When asked why the band continues to tour, Jagger quipped, "Either we stay home and become pillars of the community or we go out on tour." Then he added, "We couldn't find any communities that needed pillars."

Someone asked about set lists and Richards said it "depends on which ones we remember" and that the smaller "club dates will give the band a chance to play stuff like 'garage shit' that doesn't work well in stadiums." Another reporter referred to Paul McCartney's outrageous ticket prices at his recent shows (the best seat in the house at Sir Paul's gigs went for $250). The reporter compared it to the Stones' ticket prices by asking, "Does Mick need the money?" To which Richards responded, "There's more of us," with a smirky grin.

What makes this tour different from past ones is that every ticket sold will include virtual membership to the Rolling Stones fan club at www.rollingstones.com. The site will include updated information on every aspect of the Stones tour including Mick's flings, Keith's daily doses, Charlie's suits and Woody's recovery from rehab.

The band has a yet to name their two-CD "best of" from 1963 to present, which they will be promoting at tour time. Not to worry, it will include a couple of new tracks. Possible opening acts that have been lined up for the trek include Sheryl Crow, Buddy Guy, No Doubt and Johnny Lang. New York-area dates include Sept. 26th at Madison Square Garden, Sept. 27th at Giants Stadium and Sept. 30th at Roseland. More dates below. Stay tuned....
